Currently, an initial lot of 1,000 customers will be able to access the new payment service, which enables them to pay for goods and services using their smartphones and tablets.

Bank Sinopac president Tina Chiang was quoted by the taipeitimes.com as saying that the bank is happy to launch the mobile business offering, which is already in use in US, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, Australia and South Korea.

The lender said that global mobile business transactions is likely to increase by a compound rate of 35% annually to 2017, which underlines better payment opportunity for lenders.

Chiang further pointed out that the new business may not be an important earnings driver in current scenario due to regulatory constraints, among other things.

Currently, the Taiwanese Financial Supervisory Commission has imposed a limit of credit card consumption over mobile devices at TWD50,000 ($1,669) and payments over mobile debit cards at TWD10,000 ($333).
