Singapore’s government appointed a consortium, which comprises European vendor Gemalto, Citibank, DBS Bank and pre-paid card specialist EZ-Link, to set up an S$40m ($31.97m) interoperable NFC infrastructure for mobile payments.

According to SingTel, the newly launched mobile payments service has been developed in collaboration with EZ-Link, which will enable customers to make cashless payments by using supported handsets at terminals at over 20,000 points, which accept EZ-Link, such as taxis, supermarkets and fast food chains.

The EZ-Link app, which supports NFC-enabled Android mobile handsets, can be downloaded from the Google Play store, which in turn will facilitate transaction history and balances check, as well as top-up the purse with any debit or credit card.

SingTel m-commerce VP Gan Hoon said the NFC solution that the company has launched is the first of many innovative mobile services that SingTel will unveil.

"We will progressively launch differentiated services that enhance our customers’ lifestyles and provide them with a unique mobile commerce experience, ranging from payments to value-added services."
