National Australia Bank (NAB) has extended its long-term agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as part of the Australian financial institution’s multi-cloud strategy.
The agreement is aimed at enhancing the bank’s technology capabilities and improving customer experiences.
Under the renewed collaboration, NAB aims to accelerate the migration of ITS critical workloads to AWS cloud infrastructure. The bank will further develop its generative artificial intelligence (genAI) capabilities, such as automated code development and training.
Through the extended alliance, AWS supports NAB’s genAI programme with tools like Amazon Q Developer, which automates code generation, allowing developers to focus on higher-value tasks for customers.
Over 1,000 NAB technologists have been trained to use this tool.
AWS Australia and New Zealand financial services director Jamie Simon said: “We’re proud to help NAB’s ongoing commitment of embracing innovation to elevate customer experiences, drive revenue growth, increase resiliency and security of its platforms, and adapt to regulatory requirements.”
NAB’s partnership with AWS began in 2013, with this extension following an earlier agreement in 2022.
As part of its cloud strategy, NAB has transitioned 84% of its on-premises infrastructure to a public multi-cloud environment.
The bank’s upcoming GenAI initiatives will include training programmes for tools like Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Q Developer and tailored genAI sessions for business executives.
According to NAB, the partnership with AWS represents a significant investment and is a key step in continuing to embed the bank’s multi-cloud approach.
NAB’s customer services supported by AWS include its digital channels, such as internet banking and the NAB Connect online business platform.
Additionally, services like Simple Home Loans and the recent implementation of Amazon Connect, AWS’s omnichannel cloud contact centre service, are part of the bank’s AWS-enabled offerings.
NAB technology and enterprise operations group executive Patrick Wright said: “We have been a leader in delivering the very best training opportunities to our people, crucial to ensuring we’re supporting Australians with the skills they need for the future.
“Since we set out on this journey in 2018, more than 3,360 NAB colleagues are now AWS Certified Cloud ‘Practitioners’ and many other organisations have implemented cloud education mirrored on NAB’s Tech Academy and Cloud Guild programs.”
