According to a press release, Tourism Malaysia statistics show that Singaporean tourists made up more than 50% of the tourist arrivals in Malaysia in 2006. In addition, tourism spending is expected to grow if Tourism Malaysia hits its target of 10 million visitors from Singapore in 2007.

As part of the group’s strategy to increase cross-border visits and credit card transactions, Maybank, in association with Tourism Malaysia, will launch a number of joint promotions. Maybank card customers will also benefit from additional privileges that are currently in the pipeline, and include exclusive deals on transportation and grocery shopping.

Singaporeans who need to perform cross-border transactions will find most value in Maybank’s RegionLink services, which are convenient regional payment services covering Brunei, Malaysia and the Philippines. A recently-launched low-cost remittance option, the Maybank Visa money transfer (VMT), is the first funds transfer service in Singapore that allows customers to transfer funds overseas, as quickly as within one working day, via the secure Visa card payment network.

Helen Neo, head of consumer banking at Maybank Singapore, commented: As it is, Malaysia is already the top holiday destination amongst Singaporeans. It is only logical for them to arm themselves with a Maybank card to take advantage of the exclusive discounts and privileges and the extensive ATM and merchant network offered by Malaysia’s leading bank.
