Ms Dorner will be based at the North America headquarters of HSBC in New York City, which also serves as the US headquarters for the bank. She succeeds Paul Lawrence, who was recently appointed head of group audit, HSBC Holdings, and has relocated to London.

Ms Dorner is an experienced international banker who most recently served for nearly three years as deputy chairman and CEO of HSBC Bank Malaysia. She began her career with HSBC in 1982 as an in-house lawyer of Samuel Montagu, the merchant banking arm of Midland Bank, which was later acquired by the HSBC Group.

She has since held positions as chief operating officer of treasury and capital markets, and general manager of marketing and human resources functions for HSBC Bank. She also had responsibility for HSBC Bank’s branch network in the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and was general manager, premier and wealth management.

Brendan McDonagh, CEO of HSBC North America, said: “Ms Dorner has a proven track record in developing business and has considerable experience with HSBC’s global operations. She is an ideal person to lead our US bank at this time as we continue to execute our strategy here and further join-up our US banking franchise with HSBC globally to benefit of our customers, employees and shareholders.”
