Two British banks cited safety concerns as the reason behind the closure of branches.

The pullout affected HSBC’s four branches with 334 employees and Standard Chartered’s seven branches with 500 staff.

The banks said other banking operations, such as ATMs, were operating as usual.

On March 13, clashes between mainly Shiite Muslim protesters demanding democracy through elections and forces from their Sunni government escalated, leaving more than 100 people injured.

King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa declared a three-month state of emergency yesterday to quell the violence.
