Despite the cautious reopening, withdrawals will still be restricted up to €420 once a week instead of just €60 a day. Greeks will be able to deposit cheques but noe cash them, pay bills as well as have access to safety deposit boxes and withdraw money without an ATM card.

Reuters quoted Greece banking association head Louka Katseli talking to Skai television: "Capital controls and restrictions on withdrawals will remain in place but we are entering a new stage which we all hope will be one of normality."

However, restrictions on sending money abroad in addition to other controls, remain unchanged, including opening of new accounts.

The latest development is aimed at restoring trust inside as well as outside Greece after an aid-for-reforms deal last week prevented bankruptcy.

Last week Greece was compelled to agree to a tough fiscal package in a bid to earn a three-year bailout from its international creditors and also to prevent crashing out of the Eurozone.

This followed shutdown of banks in the country for almost three weeks, as they ran out of cash, which is expected to have cost the Greek economy €3bn.
