Gemalto, a digital security service provider, said that it will deploy its Dexxis instant issuance solution in Indonesia to allow on-the-spot delivery of secure microprocessor-based banking cards. Gemalto is working with local partner SAI (Smart Aplikasi Indonesia), an affiliate of IT Network solutions provider Alita.

Gemalto’s solution is decentralized instant card issuance, in-person, in-branch, and in a matter of minutes. The Dexxis solution offer includes EMV smart cards, servers, software, printers, and training to deploy the solution over a secure TCP/IP trusted network in the banking and retail environment.

Gemalto claimed that by using fingerprint biometric authentication from the software inside the chip, the smart cards provide a higher level of security to the cardholder and the issuer. The biometric also simplifies use of the card by eliminating the need to remember the PIN code, which can be a challenge for consumers new to electronic banking. The card can store various types of secure banking services such as an e-purse, prepaid data, deposit remittances, savings and loans, as well as financial and health insurance.

Putranto, CEO and president of SAI, said: “This is an exciting period for the microfinance sector in Indonesia with the introduction of smart card technology. Gemalto brings a wealth of experience in digital security solutions for the financial sector and together, we can improve the lives of many by offering them simplified access and greater security in their daily activities.”

Tan Teck Lee, president of Gemalto Asia, said: “This instant issuance model makes it possible to efficiently serve a widely dispersed population of unbanked consumers.

“In addition, it is more cost-effective and simpler than trying to deliver individual personalized cards by mail, especially when you consider that many of the unbanked don’t have a postal address or effective postal service. We are delighted that Indonesian consumers will now have better access to financial services with the microfinance solution, delivered through our partner SAI.”
