Mr de Stasio will be responsible for Barclays growing retail and commercial banking business in Italy and for Banca Woolwich, Barclays’ existing mortgage distribution arm in Italy.
The need for the new appointment comes in the wake of Barclays’ announcement in March that it intended to build a network of around 50 Barclays branded branches in Italy within the next 12 months. The first of these branches, targeting affluent consumers, opened in Milan in July.
Mr de Stasio joins Barclays from Capitalia where he worked for eight years, initially at Banco di Roma and for the last four years as general manager of Bipop-Carire. He will report to Jacobo Gonzalez-Robatto, chief executive of Barclays banking operations in southern Europe.
