In a bid to provide an improved service to business customers, the new system will entail the replacement of paper stationery with the use of plastic cards, for those who make regular deposits, withdrawals and require a change-giving service through Post Office branches.

Business customers will be provided with a PIN-protected withdrawal card as an added security feature, to use when making withdrawals that would traditionally require withdrawal slips and checks. This new automated system is expected to reduce the amount of paper flowing between the Post Office and the bank by 50%.

Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank initially introduced the automated system for small business customers making deposits. Following the success of this pilot we have taken the decision to extend the automated system to other banking services and to incorporate all customers, said Steve Jennings, director of business banking at Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank. Given the added security benefit for customers and the reduction in the amount of paper generated via transactions, we believe this the new system will prove to be a very popular with business customers of all sizes.
