The responsibilities will include participating in conferences, seminars and working parties on behalf of the AFS’s members and providing avenues for the interests of individual societies to be heard by a wider audience. Mr Andrew’s period of office will run for a year until October 2008.

Andrew Townsley said: I am extremely honored to be elected president of the Association of Friendly Societies and look forward to leading the board towards our two main goals: to raise the profile of friendly societies; and to protect the interests of members.

The association exists to help its members meet the challenges of today’s financial services industry and to promote the diversity and benefits of a movement that has existed for centuries. Therefore, one of our key aims this year will be to further boost awareness of friendly societies and the tax exempt savings that only they can offer.
