The card will have all of the functionality of other debit cards already available in Ireland, namely use at points of sale, online, via telephone, and at ATMs, as well as a check guarantee option. However, the main benefit the Visa Debit card has over other debit cards in Ireland is that it can be used internationally, with acceptance in over 24 million locations worldwide and through one of the world’s largest ATM networks.
Other key features of the new debit card include fee-free ATM and point of sale euro transactions throughout the eurozone and chip and PIN security.
We are delighted to see the introduction of Visa Debit into the Irish marketplace. It will change the way in which Irish consumers pay for goods and services both in Ireland and overseas, commented Sandra Alzetta, senior vice president of innovation at Visa Europe.
Consumers shopping on Grafton Street in Dublin or at Champs-Elysees in Paris will have the same payment experience using Visa Debit. Visa Debit users will now also be able to purchase goods online using their debit card. Ultimately it is a more efficient, flexible and secure payment option, she continued.
The card will be issued by Halifax’s Bank of Scotland (Ireland) division.
