The new Android-based app ‘Kotak Bharat’ works without any internet connection and is primarily targeted for customers in the under-banked and un-banked regions.
Said to be offered in Hindi and English languages at present, the app can be accessed by those residing in remote regions easily in their language of choice.
In addition to these two languages, Kotak plans to offer Kotak Bharat in other languages such as Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and Kannada soon.
Business Standard quoted Kotak Mahindra executive vice president Deepak Sharma saying at a conference call that using the app customers will be able to manage their savings/current accounts as well as credit cards.
"We selected Lucknow for the maiden launch of the app as it is the most prominent Hindi belt centre."
The app can be downloaded by customers on their registered mobile number without following any separate registration process.
Sharma said that about 30% of the bank’s customers use the existing app for mobile banking.
The app can also be used to recharge mobile/DTH services, link Aadhaar number to the account, find the locations of ATMs & branches of Kotak and apply for Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, among others.
