According to the US lender, De Giorgi and Bob Elfring, currently head of investment banking in northern Europe, will be co-heads for Europe, Middle East and Africa, based in London.

The bank anticipates that both executives will "drive the growth" of the team, which lost Andrea Orcel to UBS in March.

De Giorgi will report to Christian Meissner and Alex Wilmot-Sitwell, BofA’s head of global corporate and investment banking and president of its European division respectively.

Goldman did not comment on the unexpected move of De Giorgi, who was a partner and the New York-based chief operating officer of investment banking.
