Citibank has been awarded the Provision of Purchasing Card Programme contract by the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Under the terms of agreement, Citi will issue purchasing cards to more than 3,000 government employees for an initial period of the next three years from 1 June 2009 and it will also act as the merchant acquiring bank for the government’s suppliers.

By using purchasing cards, the government will have benefits resulting from a streamlined procurement and payment process for minor purchases. Citibank Purchasing Card provides an accurate and timely execution and end-to-end support. Meanwhile, the government’s vendors will gain access to a larger customer base via Citi’s online platform.

Anthony Nappi, Managing Director, Region Head of Global Transaction Services, said: “With the launch of this Purchasing Card Programme, we foresee new business opportunities for both our purchasing card business and merchant acquiring service in Hong Kong and across the region.”

Carmen Ling, Managing Director, Global Transaction Services Head for Hong Kong, said: “With a growing economy, a high spending rate versus other regional markets and the strength of providing innovative card solutions, we are confident on the future of this innovative product in Hong Kong. Winning this mandate is a testament to our experience and track record in Hong Kong.”
