Offered by Visa Europe following a successful trial in 25 London stores last summer, the technology will enable the retailer to process more than 230,000 contactless transactions every week.

The new contactless payment platform allows consumers to simply touch the reader with their contactless cards, or enabled mobile phones’ to pay for goods under £20 without entering a PIN.

M&S retail director Sacha Berendji said that the contactless and mobile payment will benefit the future retail landscape due to its operational and time efficiency, as a contactless payment takes place in less than a second.

Currently, there are over 200,000 contactless acceptance points in the UK in addition to the 26.4 million contactless Visa cards.

M&S Finsbury Pavement store manager Richard Cooke added that the payment option supported by a contactless Visa debit card has helped to reduce queue times even further, giving customers a payment option that’s even quicker than cash.

Visa Europe operates as a payments technology business owned and operated by member banks and other payment service providers from 36 countries across Europe.
