Mr Coulter will report to Walid Chammah, Morgan Stanley’s co-president and chairman and CEO of Europe, Middle East and African region, and will be responsible both for growing Morgan Stanley’s franchise in South Africa and for overseeing the development of its business across sub-Saharan Africa. Mr Coulter was most recently the group CEO of Brait, a South African private equity and alternative investments firm.

Mr Chammah said: Not only is South Africa an important growth market for us, but there are considerable opportunities for the firm across sub-Saharan Africa as a whole. John Coulter’s broad investment banking background, including derivatives, commodities and structured finance, combined with his experience in emerging markets and deep knowledge of South Africa, make him the ideal candidate to grow Morgan Stanley’s business in the region.
