Washington Mutual has asked Mr Landefeld to lead the bank’s legal department while the company conducts a search for a successor chief legal officer.

Mr Landefeld is not a candidate for the position as successor chief legal officer, and he expects to return to the firm as a partner and as chair of the business practice as soon as Washington Mutual’s search concludes.

Robert Giles, managing partner of Perkins Coie, said: Perkins Coie is pleased that Stewart is able to respond to the needs of an important client in this way. We look forward to his return, which we hope to be as soon as possible after the search for a permanent chief legal officer is successfully concluded.
