Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) has completed the full migration of its global data platform, Analytics, Data, AI (ADA) to Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Europe and Uruguay.

This move further advances the bank’s data-driven transformation.

The migration was achieved without service disruptions and involved transitioning tens of thousands of processes and thousands of users to the cloud.

ADA serves as the backbone of BBVA’s efforts to streamline internal operations, manage risk models, and drive global expansion. The platform enhances data storage efficiency while offering the flexibility and capacity to accommodate BBVA’s rapid growth.

It also strengthens the security of BBVA’s customer and transaction data repository and equips the bank’s various units with real-time business and market insights. These capabilities allow BBVA to deploy new products more rapidly and provide hyper-personalised services to customers.

In addition, ADA is said to have reduced the latency of end-user analytical work environments by 94%.

The Spanish financial services company plans to extend the deployment of the platform to other key markets, including Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Argentina, by 2025.

BBVA data engineering global head Marta Sanz said: “With the migration already well-consolidated, we are ready to progressively incorporate into ADS technological innovations from a leading cloud service provider, namely AWS, such as real-time data processing and unstructured data management.

“These capabilities will allow us to unlock the full potential of artificial intelligence in our solutions.”

The migration project required meticulous planning to address challenges in security, regulatory compliance, data migration, and change management.

Collaboration across multiple BBVA departments, including architecture, data engineering, and business units in Spain, Uruguay, and corporate and investment banking was integral to the migration’s success, said the bank.

In addition, partnerships with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Accenture are said to have helped the bank in overcoming technical challenges and ensuring the seamless transition to the cloud.

BBVA selected AWS in 2023 to expedite its digital transformation journey.

AWS financial services managing director Scott Mullins said: “ADA is a platform designed for the future, and its innovative approach is transforming internal processes, thus making BBVA more operationally efficient, better able to attract technology talent and lead the way in advanced technology.”
