Cucchiani, a member of Allianz’s management board and head of its Italian unit, succeeds Corrado Passera, who left the bank to join Italy’s new government.
Allianz said in its own announcement that the insurer’s supervisory board had yet to authorise the executive’s release from his contract.
The personnel committee of Allianz supervisory board will ask the supervisory board to accept the resignation during its upcoming regular meeting in December 2011.
Cucchiani comes to Intesa Sanpaolo after serving as chairman of Allianz.
He also served as the chairman of Lloyd Adriatico from 2001 to 2007 after serving as its general manager since 1996 and managing director and CEO since 1998.
Prior to Lloyd Adriatico, Cucchiani served was general manager of Gucci Group from 1985 to 1992.
